Citadel of Heart is one of the historic houses in Afghanistan. It is located in the center of Heart City, the third largest city in Afghanistan. This famous place dates back to 330 BC. It was originally used as headquarters by many emperors in the last 2,000 years.
Alexander the Great built this historic citadel in 330BC after conquering the Achaemenid city. Citadel was destroyed and rebuilt so many times over the centuries and it was excavated and restored by UNIESCO between 1976 and 79. The National Museum of Heart is inside the Citadel.
In recent years the Citadel of Heart was renovated and now it consist of two walled enclosures. Many Afghan Craftsmen were involved and 2.4 million (USD) was given by U.S and German Government in this renovation activity of this famous house.
- Citadel became a seat of Christianity, with a Nestorian bishop Around 300.
- It became part of the Hephthalite Empire Around 484.
- It was part of the Abbasid caliphate Around 786-809.
- In a while, it was ruled by the Tahirid dynasty.
- The Saffarid dynasty took control After 867-869.
